Inside a class

One step at a time.
Always at your pace.

A game of leverage and timing. Closer to chess than boxing.

  1. Warm up

Get moving and ease into the class.

  2. Learn the technique

One or two techniques, taught slowly.

  3. Practise together

Drill what you’ve learned with a partner.

  4. Roll when you’re ready

If and when you feel ready. Never before.

In Jose’s words

“The only person who makes it dangerous for you is yourself. And in our gym, you don’t get to do that, because we won’t let you.”

What to wear and bring

Walking in is the hardest part

Wear

Shorts and a t-shirt for your first go. We’ll lend you a clean gi, so there’s nothing to buy before you know you love it.

Bring

Water and a towel. That’s the lot.

Your first month

From stranger to family

Three members standing together on the academy mats
That shift, from stranger to family, is the whole point of this place.
01

Chatting before class

02

Hanging around after

03

A grin from the room

Most people walk in a bit timid and, three months later, they’re part of the furniture. Chatting before class. Hanging around after with questions. Getting a big grin from the room when they come up the stairs.
