Can I cancel any time?

Yes, and we mean it. No lock-in. Train for a couple of weeks, and if it’s not for you, one phone call sorts it. We’d rather you felt free to give it a proper go.

How much is membership?

$43 a week for adults, school term packages from $172.50 for kids, with casual and visitor rates on the membership page. We put the prices up front so there are no awkward surprises.

I’ve never done jiu-jitsu. Where do I start?

Right here. Head to Start Here, or just book a free class. The six-week Fundamentals Course and Beginners classes are built for people on day one.

Do I need to be fit to start?

Not at all. You train at your own pace from day one, and the fitness comes from the training itself.

What should I bring to my first class?

Shorts, a t-shirt, water and a towel. We’ll lend you a clean gi, so there’s nothing to buy before you know you love it.

Isn’t it just fighting? Will I get hurt?

It looks like a fight from the outside, but it’s a game of leverage and timing. Leave your ego at the door, come to learn, and it’s safe. In our gym, the higher belts make sure of it.

What ages are the kids’ classes?

Ages 5 to 12. Games first, technique always, and no striking, ever.

Gi or no-gi, which should I pick?

Try both. The gi is about control and patience, no-gi is faster and more scramble-heavy. Most people end up doing both.

I’m only visiting. Can I drop in?

Always welcome. See the visitor rates and the timetable, and come as you are.

How much are private lessons?

From $120 an hour, depending on the coach.

What makes Carlson Gracie different?

A real Carlson Gracie lineage, a deep roster of black belts, world-class seminars in our own town, and a family of academies across the South Island. Most of all, a culture where everyone has a hand in helping everyone else get better.
